Jerome S. Cohen


Jerome S. Cohen is the firm’s founding partner with over four decades of experience in business bankruptcy and insolvency matters. Mr. Cohen’s clients have included private and governmental entities, individuals, partnerships, and corporations. Mr. Cohen is board certified, assuring clients of the highest possible standards. Few of America’s lawyers can claim this distinction as the Board requires a rigorous certification process. Mr. Cohen easily rises to this challenge; handling complex problems and prevailing in court and with out of court settlements.

Known for being a creative and results oriented attorney, Mr. Cohen has prevailed in both trial and motion practice before the bankruptcy courts, and has achieved favorable out of court settlements in national, regional, and local scale cases. In Chapter 11 debtor representation, he has confirmed plans and gained a significant form of recognition, judicial approval of fee requests on the basis of cost effective service.

Mr. Cohen's clients have included, on the creditor side, the City of Long Beach (as crude oil supplier to Chapter 11 debtor Thrifty Oil Company); Farmers and Merchants Trust Company of Long Beach; Fifth Third Trust Company (Ohio); Shoreline Village (owner of the Long Beach landmark waterfront shopping center); Franconia Two (owner of Tyson's Corner Mall, Virginia); and numerous other creditors in America and overseas, including creditors of major airlines in Chapter 11.

Mr. Cohen earned a law degree from University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1964 and holds Bar Admissions in California, Delaware, District of Columbia, and Maryland. He is board certified in Business Bankruptcy Law from the American Board of Certification (July 2001 to present). He has an AV Rating from Martindale Hubbell.


Scott P. Layfield

Scott P. Layfield


Scott P. Layfield is an associate of JSC, and his legal practice focuses on the corporate aspect of business bankruptcy, restructuring, and litigation. Mr. Layfield received his Juris Doctorate, cum laude, from Pepperdine University School of Law in 2006. While in law school, he served as an extern for the Honorable Kathleen Thompson at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Central District of California. Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Layfield practiced in the areas of civil litigation and corporate law. In 2005, Layfield received his Master of Business Administration from Pepperdine University Graziadio School of Business and Management. Mr. Layfield is admitted to practice in the state of California.


 

William Gynan IV


William Gynan is an associate of JSC. Mr. Gynan received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Southern California, Gould School of Law in 2008. While in law school, he was an intern and student supervisor with the School of Law's Post-Conviction Justice Project. Prior to joining JSC, Mr. Gynan practiced corporate transactional law, with an emphasis on banking and finance, and civil litigation. He graduated from Brandeis University in 2004.
